“Okay, okay, so the Thorwalds are going to be on their worst behavior basically?” I checked as Horus straightened out my tie. “The goal being to show Barney what insufferable asses they are and this is a shit deal for Professor Farrell?” I had been calling him that for the past few days, since we’d found out and set up this meeting so that I didn’t accidentally slip up no matter what shit came at us.
We’d actually agreed I shouldn’t call him by his first name until everything was over.
“Yup,” Doyle confirmed.
“And why do you guys get to be here?” Farrell questioned, glancing between us. “I mean, don’t take this the wrong way, because I love the backup and all, but how are we explaining this?”
“I’m me so who wouldn’t want me to dinner?” Doyle batted his eyelashes at us, trying to break some of the tension and it worked but only for a second. “Basically everyone knows the Thorwalds and McCreadys are rivals so it’s more like I’m here as a frenemy they want to show off for. I mean, Diego’s father and mine hate each other. And Jericho’s my bodyguard, mostly.”
“Mostly?”
I’d already figured that one out on my own and was totally fine with it as long as it got me into the dinner and able to show Horus I was there for him. We didn’t get a chance to answer because the butler opened the door to the sitting room we were waiting in and Diego entered, escorting Tasha, arms looped, and Thorwald Sr. was walking next to a man I didn’t know.
But he practically screamed evil and not to be trusted, even as he glanced around not in appreciation, but like he was casing the joint. Dear lord what a scum bucket.
“Ah, Professor Farrell, so good of you to come,” Thorwald greeted as he walked over, shaking his hand. They exchanged pleasantries and then Thorwald’s attitude changed as he turned to Doyle. “Young McCready, nice of you to join us as well. I hear Diego invited you to see how real dealings are done between crests instead of all that fanfare and posturing your father’s affairs always are.”
They shook hands, and Doyle gave him the smile I was sure he normally reserved for the camera, like he had a secret and everyone should want to know it… He was good because I even found myself wondering what it might be or he would say next.
“I wouldn’t really know, Mr. Thorwald. My father doesn’t believe in sharing information, teaching, or anything resembling teamwork or family, only obedience. Then again, I wouldn’t want his tutelage anyways.”
“Poor lad, no guidance. It’s such a shame,” the man who had to be Barney taunted. Wow, he was stupid and not looped in.
“Oh, I think I’m doing just fine,” Doyle chuckled easily, blasting those pearly whites. “I have the top crest at the most prestigious college our people have, worldwide fame, and modeling career. I really would save the pity for someone who needs it.
